Boys Basketball League Information
Founded in 1984, the Junior Comet Boys Basketball Program is a recreational league for players in grades 1st-7th. Our league and its coaches support players in understanding the fundamentals of the game, developing their skills, and building self-esteem and sportsmanship in a positive, team-oriented environment. The core principle of all Junior Comet programs emphasizes fair and equal play for every team member, rather than solely focusing on winning.
League Levels:
Level 1: Grades 1-2 Level 2: Grades 3-4 Level 3: Grades 5-7
TEAM INFORMATION
Please make sure your child is genuinely interested in participating. Team placement comes with the expectation of a full-season commitment, including regular attendance at games and practices. While we understand the desire to play with friends, teams are typically a mix of players from multiple schools. As part of the Junior Comet Sports philosophy, we aim to support children's social development by encouraging them to meet new peers, build new friendships, and grow comfortable in new group settings. You can make some team requests, please see the 'Parent Requests' section below.
Siblings:
Siblings in the same level will automatically be placed on the same team, unless parents request otherwise.
Team Placement Notification:
Coaches will contact families by phone or text so please ensure your phone numbers are entered correctly during registration. If you don’t hear from your coach by October 24th, please contact us at [email protected]
Team Jerseys:
Jersey shirts are included with your registration fee and will be provided to all players. We're currently seeking sponsors—if you or a business you know is interested in having their name featured on a team’s jerseys, please reach out to us! [email protected]
PRACTICES & GAMES
Practices:
Practices are held in Central Point, Gold Hill, and Sams Valley. Occasionally, some practices are held in Medford schools near Central Point. Teams typically practice twice a week. Level 1 practices for 1 hour, usually between 4:00-6:00pm. Level 2 practices for 1 hour 15 minutes, and Level 3 practices for 1 ½ hours. Level 2 & 3 practices are usually scheduled between 4:00-8:00pm. Practice duration and times may change, as they are dependent on gym availability.
**Please note: if you have multiple children participating in different levels, it is likely that you will have practices each day of the week at different times and at different gyms. It is also possible that they will practice at the same time at different gyms.
Missed Practices:
Coaches are required to provide equal playing time to players who consistently attend practice. However, for unexcused absences, the following applies: if a player misses one practice in a week, the coach has the discretion to reduce that player’s game time by half. If a player misses both practices without an excuse, the coach is not required to play that player at all. These decisions are entirely at the coach’s discretion.
The only way to earn playing time is by showing up and participating in practice. If you know in advance that your child will miss a practice for any reason, it's important to communicate with the coach ahead of time.
Games:
All Games will be held on Saturdays between 8:00am-3:00pm, with the possibility of some weekday games (TBD). Games are played at Central Point Elementary, Jewett, Mae Richardson, and Scenic. Coaches will distribute the game schedule as soon as it’s available.
Player Equipment Needed:
Basketball (preferred, but not required), athletic shoes and black shorts.
Referees:
Level 1: Volunteer coaches referee their own games
Level 2: Volunteer coaches referee other Level 2 games
Level 3: Paid referee
SKILLS EVALUATION DAY:
Sunday, October 5th, 12:00-4:00pm at Scenic Middle School
OR (you don't have to attend both)
Tuesday, October 7th, 5:30-7:30pm at Scenic Middle School
Purpose of Skills Evaluation Day:
It is incredibly important that your player attends Skills Evaluation Day. Players are scored based on their performance at each skills station, and those scores are used to conduct a draft to help ensure evenly matched teams—one of the core goals of Junior Comet Sports. If your player cannot attend the evaluation, they will still be placed on a team, but they will be alphabetically assigned to a team after the draft rather than selected during it.
Coach’s Kid(s) on Skills Evaluation Day:
A coach’s child must turn in a completed skills evaluation card. They will be drafted to the coach’s team in whichever round their scores place them into. Failure to do so will result in that player becoming a 1st round pick.
Team Draft:
Every Junior Comet league holds a draft to create teams. Coaches review player performance information gathered at Skills Evaluation Day to create a balanced team. Players that cannot attend one of the Skills Evaluation Days cannot be drafted by a coach and will instead be placed on teams in alphabetical order at the end of the draft.
At the coaches meeting before the draft, we will cover all key aspects of the Junior Comet Boys Basketball program—including, but not limited to, expectations for coaches, players, and parents, playing time guidelines, and league rules. This is also when coaches will set their practice days and times, choose team colors, and receive their team equipment.
PARENT REQUESTS:
-Can I request my player to be on the same team as a friend?
This can be a bit complicated, but the short answer is no — we do not place friends on the same teams solely so they can be with their buddies. The only exception is a legitimate rideshare need. Junior Comet Sports encourages kids to step out of their comfort zones, try new things, and make new friends.
If you require a rideshare arrangement for your child, you MUST make this request at Skills Evaluation Day. All requests will be reviewed for approval by the Junior Comet Boys Basketball Board.
-Can my children (siblings) play on the same team if they are in different levels?
Yes. This is the only request for players to be on the same team that we accept without review. Depending on the players' ages and experience, the younger player would most likely have to play up a level. Requests MUST be made at Skills Evaluation Day. At that time, we can discuss the best placement options for your players. Siblings in the same level will automatically be placed on the same team, unless parents request otherwise.
-Can I request certain days and times not to practice?
Yes. We understand that many families have weekday commitments, and we strive to accommodate your schedules as best we can. Requests MUST be made at Skills Evaluation Day. Once teams are formed, it is very difficult to move a player if they are unavailable on their assigned practice day.
-Can I request a coach?
No, we do not allow this. Teams are drafted by coaches. You may request to NOT have a previous coach.
