Coaching Information and Guidelines
Founded in 1984, the Junior Comet Boys Basketball Program is a recreational league for players in grades 1st-7th. Our league and its coaches support players in understanding the fundamentals of the game, developing their skills, and building self-esteem and sportsmanship in a positive, team-oriented environment. The core principle of all Junior Comet programs emphasizes fair and equal play for every team member, rather than solely focusing on winning.
League Levels:
Level 1: Grades 1-2 Level 2: Grades 3-4 Level 3: Grades 5-7
PRACTICES & GAMES
Practices:
Practices are held in Central Point, Gold Hill, and Sams Valley. Occasionally, some practices are held in Medford schools near Central Point. Teams typically practice twice a week. Level 1 practices for 1 hour, usually between 4:00-6:00pm. Level 2 practices for 1 hour 15 minutes, and Level 3 practices for 1 ½ hours. Level 2 & 3 practices are usually scheduled between 4:00-8:00pm. Practice duration and times may change, as they are dependent on gym availability.
Communication with Families:
Coaches are expected to communicate with families in a timely manner regarding team placement, practice and game schedules.
Missed Practices:
Coaches are required to provide equal playing time to players who consistently attend practice. However, for unexcused absences, the following applies: if a player misses one practice in a week, the coach has the discretion to reduce that player’s game time by half. If a player misses both practices without an excuse, the coach is not required to play that player at all. These decisions are entirely at the coach’s discretion. The only way to earn playing time is by showing up and participating in practice. If you know in advance that your child will miss a practice for any reason, it's important to communicate with the coach ahead of time.
Games:
All Games will be held on Saturdays between 8:00am-3:00pm, with the possibility of some weekday games (TBD). Games are played at Central Point Elementary, Jewett, Mae Richardson, and Scenic. Coaches will distribute the game schedule as soon as it’s available.
Referees:
Level 1: Volunteer coaches referee their own games
Level 2: Volunteer coaches referee other Level 2 games
Level 3: Paid referee
Rules:
Our rules may differ from other leagues. Please check out our 'Boys BB Rules' page.
SKILLS EVALUATION DAY:
Coaches are encouraged to attend but not required.
Sunday, October 5th, 12:00-4:00pm at Scenic Middle School
OR (you don't have to attend both)
Tuesday, October 7th, 5:30-7:30pm at Scenic Middle School
Coach’s Kid(s) on Skills Evaluation Day:
A coach’s child must turn in a completed skills evaluation card. They will be drafted to the coach’s team in whichever round their scores place them into. Failure to do so will result in that player becoming a 1st round pick.
Coach's Clinic: Saturday, October 4th, 4:00-7:30pm at Central Point Elementary
At this meeting we will cover all key aspects of the Junior Comet Boys Basketball program—including, but not limited to, expectations for coaches, players and parents, playing time guidelines, league rules, and information about how to run a practice. This is also when coaches will set their practice days and times, choose team colors, and receive their team equipment.
Team Draft: Tuesday, October 14th, 6:30-8:30pm at Central Point Elementary
Every Junior Comet league holds a draft to create teams. Coaches review player performance information gathered at Skills Evaluation Day to create a balanced team. Players that cannot attend one of the Skills Evaluation Days cannot be drafted by a coach and will instead be placed on teams in alphabetical order at the end of the draft.
